Main Plaza -The Heart of the City

Main Plaza

On April 13, 2008, the city opened its two-year redevelopment project and celebrated San Antonio’s continual revitalization. By restoring it and making it a place where people want to spend time, roots and traditions of San Antonio are honored.

Main Plaza’s outdoor venue features five interactive fountains, free WiFi, free public parking on weekends, public restrooms, bistro-style seating with food and drinks on site at Blue Star and RLK Italian Ices. Since opening, Main Plaza provides diverse music events bringing the finest talent and all from San Antonio and the surrounding areas.

Main Plaza provides San Antonio and its visitors with the historical and cultural heart of the city.

Main Plaza links government, culture, business – and San Antonio’s spiritual heart, San Fernando Cathedral. Charged to create a community atmosphere that attracts local residents and visitors through authentic programming that reflects the San Antonio identity, Main Plaza takes this vision further to create a public space that is family-friendly and accessible to all ages and all economic sectors.

Main Plaza continues to build upon new traditions. Visitors discover Main Plaza’s historical
significance as the birthplace of San Antonio and the site of some of the City’s greatest
landmarks and community assets.

Main Plaza is poised to be the cultural Corazon of the city – a place where San Antonio comes
to encounter life and family.

Continuing to break breathtaking ground, Main Plaza provides high quality music, accessible
arts and culture and has become the model for other public spaces.

Main Plaza: The Heart of the City received IDA’s 2009 Award of Distinction in the Public Spaces.
Main Plaza was recognized by IDA for creating open spaces that pay tribute to the community’s
culture and history while incorporating modern, urban design schemes.

San Antonio Street Dance & Drum Co.
The award-winning San Antonio Street Dance and Drum is a contemporary, multi-cultural, percussion and dance troupe that is in its 11th year performing in San Antonio. SA Street Dance is ideal for those who enjoy high-energy routines and dancing to the rhythm of many styles of percussion. It's great for those dance team individuals who have no place to dance after high-school or college students who don't have time to join the college dance team. Many of our alumni have gone on to professional/semi-professional sports entertainment cheer/dance squads or have gone on to head their own performance group. It's great experience, a great stress-reliever, and a great way to say in shape. Our studio offers you great networking in the entertainment field. San Antonio Street Dance and Drum won 2nd Place Best Dance Award in this years Fiesta Flambeau parade.

Woodlawn Theater

The New Woodlawn Theatre: Venue and Home for Broadway Musical Theatre Productions

The historic WOODLAWN THEATRE, sister theatre to the San Antonio’s Majestic Theatre, first opened in 1946. John Wayne hosted the premiere of his classic film “The Alamo”, in which he also made his directorial debut. The premiere of Pink Floyd’s laser light show also made its debut at the historic Woodlawn Theatre.

The Woodlawn Theatre, like the Majestic Theatre, is now a venue for live entertainment. Musical groups, such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, have performed live at the Woodlawn Theatre. Now the Woodlawn Theatre brings a variety of entertainment, including talent shows, pageants, concerts, comedy shows, and main stage live Broadway musicals. Live musicals that have recently been performed at the Woodlawn Theatre include Peter Pan, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Disney’s High School Musical and High School Musical 2, Grease, Chicago, The Wizard of Oz, and many other fabulous musical theatre productions.

Recently, the Woodlawn Theatre opened its BLACK BOX theatre, a smaller “off-Broadway” type venue located underneath the newly restored balcony. Jonathan Larson’s (creator of Rent) autobiographical musical Tick, Tick…Boom was our first production in this theatre and it received excellent reviews, with audience members returning to see the production multiple times!

In addition to Broadway musical Main Stage and Black Box productions, the Woodlawn Theatre also directs YOUTH MUISCAL THEATRE WORKSHOPS for students interested in the art of musical theatre. In these workshops, children learn singing techniques, stage movement and dance, theatre terms, amazing acting skills, improvisation, and best of all, self-esteem. Film direction and editing classes, tap, jazz, ballet, and hip hop classes, and improvisation workshops for adults and children are now in production!

We welcome you to one of the fastest growing theatres in Texas, THE WOODLAWN THEATRE!
